There is this street in Makasar, Jalan Sulawesi, with many sellers/buyers of gold. They sit behind a small wooden box with a glass front. Inside a small scale ready to weight the gold that people who maybe need some cash will bring. The sellers wait, and wait, and wait …

  I walked around Blok M in South Jakarta a couple of weekends ago. It is a busy area. It has a bus terminal with modern and very old buses, a market, an old mall, street vendors, local roadside restaurants (warungs).  I saw these three young men who walked towards a local vendor.  They seemed to wear the same style-clothes and share a similar identity.

Cycling to work in Jakarta: can we start to hope?

Even though this is Jakarta, I cycle every day to work. Last week, I think it was Wednesday, I rode my usual route to the office where I work. I started in Kebayoran Baru, got into the traffic logged Antasari, then up to Senopati before getting on the footbridge at the Senayan Transjakarta bus station over Jalan Sudirman.
